The HackMD Versions API
is now live!
***********************
Hey nseemre!
Your team’s documents live on HackMD, and they change constantly. Until now, anything you built on top of HackMD could see a note’s current content and almost nothing about how it got there.
The Versions API is now live in production at https://api.hackmd.io/v1 ( https://api.hackmd.io/v1/docs?_gl=1*ixjc22*_ga*ODA2OTg0MDczLjE3NzY3NzUwMTE.*_ga_NGVZMM6DR6*czE3ODg5NjQ2MzAkbzExMSRnMSR0MTc4ODk2NzA3MiRqNDUkbDEkaDE2MzkyNDg2MzM. ), with five operations under /notes/{noteId}/versions.

What’s new in this release:
* List and search a note’s version history, filtered by named versions, free text, or creator.
* Read any saved version’s metadata and content.
* Compare two saved versions, or a saved version against current note content, as a unified diff.
* Name a version as a document milestone, and update its metadata.

For most HackMD users, nothing changes today. Version history in the editor behaves exactly as it did. What is new is the programmatic route.

You need a HackMD API token and a note ID, the same authentication the rest of the API uses. Head over to the Developer Portal to generate your access token and view the updated documentation.

💡 Integration Tip for Developers: a named version is a marker, not an approval. It carries no permission and records no sign-off, so don’t treat it as a review gate.
On free workspaces, content is readable for the 10 most recent versions. Older versions still appear in listings, marked as content-unavailable. Version names are not subject to that limit.
Our Model Context Protocol (MCP) server and hackmd-cli do not expose these endpoints yet.
Happy Hacking,
The HackMD Team
