       Hi Emre,

It's Hannah here, a former au pair! I wanted to share open and honestly with you how it was for me being away from home. Sooooo here we go.. A letter from someone who has been exactly where you are right now. And promise no sweet talking, I’ll be open with you;)

 

                      **So hi there I’m Hannah!** I was at a point in my life where I wanted to grow more as a person. And the thought of travelling the world felt exciting, but scary at the same time. As an au pair I could live with a host family and feel safe, earn money and still explore. And that's what I did! So here's my au pair story.

**🏡 Finding my host family**

I made my account at Nina.care and started chatting there. I had quite a few video calls with families in Spain, but I knew that when I found the right one, there would be a click. As soon as I spoke to my host mum, I felt it. Same sense of humour. Instantly warm. I knew I'd feel right at home!!

**☀️ The first weeks**

My host mum picked me up at the airport, I had nothing but a backpack and high spirits (and, honestly, a few nerves too..). Here is my first tip: The best way we broke the ice was an activity. My host dad taught me how to surf. You lie on the ground, paddle like mad, then stand up really fast without falling over. We practiced together and laughed a lot. My arms hurt so much. But doing something together was nice.

**📔 The reality**

Of course it wasn't always sunshine and rainbows. There were power struggles and tantrums at the playground, that's just part of the challenge. And it was busy, the host fam and I had to learn how to communicate. The agency actually guided me through some difficult conversations. But my host mum and I were always on the same side. We talked through everything, sometimes over wine in the evening, sometimes over breakfast. It felt like a real partnership.

**💖 My advice to you**

Nobody tells you it will also be hard. It will be. But that is where you grow! I feel so much better prepared for life now. If you want to grow as a person, truly grow, this is your opportunity.
