[Instagram or YouTube? Brands win the creator pay war either way. ](https://later.com/blog/2026-creator-income-diversified-monetization/?utm_source=klaviyo&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=the-influence&utm_content=newsletter_nov4) Clocks fell back on Sunday for some of us, which gave everyone one bonus hour that most of us spent on the couch watching someone else's videos. Instagram and YouTube both noticed, and each made a very different offer to the people making them… Quick Hits - Instagram is offering select YouTubers between $50,000 and $500,000 to post their long-form videos as Instagram Features on the same day they upload to YouTube, with no exclusivity, according to [Business Insider](https://www.businessinsider.com/instagram-offers-youtube-creators-six-figure-longform-video-deals-2026-10). - Features, Instagram's horizontal format for videos up to 90 minutes, is [testing with a small group of creators](https://www.instagram.com/p/De9ZzxeAJ76/) in the US and Brazil, who can share up to eight clips as Reels. Meta says it's too early to share a long-term payout model. - YouTube is testing a $20 AdSense payout threshold, down from $100, for a randomly selected group of Partner Program creators in the US, India, and Indonesia, starting with October payments, per [YouTube](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/14727140?hl=en). Last week [we said brands were the business model for Instagram long-form](https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/instagram-just-moved-reels-your-living-room-later-official-kgtlc?trackingId=Kcn3BQXI4ukr%2BxCI34f0ZQ%3D%3D&lipi=urn%3Ali%3Apage%3Aorganization_admin_admin_page_posts_published%3Bbb358cdc-1ab4-45d4-9e90-a46bb9539946). Instagram apparently read it and opened its own wallet, at least for a handful of YouTubers. To be fair, neither move changes what most creators earn. Instagram's checks go to a select few, and YouTube's lower threshold is a random test. What changed is that both platforms are now competing in public over how creators get paid, and they're aiming at opposite ends of the market. Instagram is paying the top of the market to borrow shows that already work on YouTube. YouTube is paying small creators sooner, because that $80 gap is a grocery run or two in the US and a much bigger deal for creators in India and Indonesia. One is buying content, and the other is protecting its pipeline. Meanwhile, creators outside those deals get no revenue share on Features, a sore spot Adam Mosseri acknowledged himself. He [told Colin and Samir](https://www.netinfluencer.com/instagram-head-says-video-creator-payments-lose-money-as-platform-tests-long-form-video/) that creators will expect a YouTube-style ad revenue share, and that if long-form doesn't pay off for them, "they won't post." We think brands win this one either way. Instagram is handing marketers a new long-form format with Reels attached, and same-day uploads mean one integration can run on both platforms. YouTube keeps the [edge in AI search](https://later.com/blog/what-cannes-lions-confirmed-about-where-creator-marketing-is-headed/?utm_source=klaviyo&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=the-influence&utm_content=newsletter_nov4). Instagram has let search engines index public creator and business posts since July 2025, but YouTube is now the most-cited platform in AI answers, [per Digiday](https://digiday.com/marketing/in-graphic-detail-llms-keep-citing-youtube-in-search-results/). That's a big deal for brands, because creator content shows up in 1 in 3 AI answers, per [our Creator AEO playbook](https://later.com/resources/creator-aeo-strategy-guide/?utm_source=klaviyo&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=the-influence&utm_content=newsletter_nov4), and McKinsey found less than 10% of what AI says about a brand comes from the brand's own content. More long-form on YouTube means more chances for your brand to come up when someone asks a chatbot what to buy. - Why it matters: 82% of creators expected brand deals to be a top revenue stream in 2026, per [Later's Creator Economy Trends Report](https://later.com/blog/2026-creator-income-diversified-monetization/?utm_source=klaviyo&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=the-influence&utm_content=newsletter_nov4), a survey of 609 creators. Platform money shows up and disappears with every new test. Brand money is the income creators actually plan around, so brands that commit to a full season will get first call on the best shows. - How we see it: Platforms are bidding for creators with big checks and faster payouts. Brands should bid with steady, multi-episode partnerships, the one thing neither platform is promising right now. Put the YouTube upload, the Instagram Feature, and the Reels cutdowns in the same contract, and confirm a creator is actually in Instagram's test before you build a brief around it. A creator who trusts your money will save their best ideas for you. The last word: Instagram wants the shows, YouTube wants the creators, and the brands signing long-term deals get both. 2026 is officially the year of diversified monetization.
