AI design looks finished. It often isn't.

No dark-mode styles — this email renders the same in a dark client.

We tested 146 AI design platforms across 32 real design tasks. Logos, landing pages, dashboards, ads, decks, even a typeface. Same detailed brief for every tool, scored on the same five criteria.

One tool changed the CTA "Book your consultation" to "Cook your consultation." The design looked perfect. Another delivered a gorgeous brand guide, but ignored the magenta-pink we specified and went with orange and brown. Nothing looked broken. It was just wrong.

Here's what else we learned:

1. AI is most reliable when the creative decisions are already made. Background removal, resizing, reframing, upscaling, and object cleanup held up well. Pricing pages and dashboards had zero critical failures, because they follow familiar patterns.

2. Complex isn't the same as open-ended. A 60-page brand guide works if your brief spells out each page. An original logo doesn't, because the key decisions come down to taste.

3. Capability isn't reliability. In one poster test, only 1 of 4 generations of the identical prompt had a legible subheading. Judge a tool by its worst result.

4. AI moves time, it doesn’t save it. You get to a first draft faster, then spend the savings on prompting, checking, and fixing.

5. QA matters more now. Before anything ships, check copy, prices, addresses, and color values against your original brief.

Our takeaway: the best results came from mixing tools, giving clear constraints, and keeping a human on the details that matter.
