This week on LinkedIn: a few posts get most of the views. The rest still count. Taplio Issue #8 The LinkedIn Weekly, by Taplio ● This week on LinkedIn ********************************************* Why are most of your LinkedIn posts flopping? ********************************************* Annika Bautista Annika Bautista ( https://www.linkedin.com/in/annika-bautista ), Taplio. I run every experiment in this newsletter on my own account. (4,580 followers) Hey there, One post gets 2,000 views. The next one gets 35. Wait what? You're not doing anything wrong. It's just the LinkedIn power law at work. The 3 posts everyone's talking about Peter Walker's LinkedIn post: State of LinkedIn content, it's power law driven, now more than ever. ( https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7522073879280934912/ ) Peter Walker · 158 reactions · 92 comments Why it worked: he names a unique phenomenon and owns it. Steal this: back a big claim with a screenshot of your own analytics. Did you get any clients?” ( https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7520046651403685888/ ) Why it worked: a celebration, then one blunt question that flips it. Read the post → ( https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7520046651403685888/ ) Have you spotted this? So what is the power law? A handful of your posts pull in most of your views, and the rest share what's left. Here's what it looks like on my own account, post by post: how many people saw it, and how many followed me because of it. My last 5 posts: views vs. new followers Pulled from my LinkedIn analytics with the Taplio LinkedIn MCP, Aug 12 to Oct 29. Impressions Followers gained Aug 12 · Our builders' retreat in France 11,623 views 10 followers Sep 3 · baby vc hits 10K subscribers 7,460 views 6 followers Sep 17 · A dinner in Stockholm 4,863 views 2 followers Sep 22 · Taplio LinkedIn MCP teaser 1,396 views 0 followers Oct 29 · Ask Taplio launch 992 views 5 followers My Ask Taplio launch got under a tenth of my top post's views, but half its new followers. Views and followers don't necessarily move together. Which is more important? Our take Yes, most of your posts are supposed to flop. That's the name of the game. That's how a power law works. But that doesn't mean they're wasted. You can't tell which post will be the hit, so the only thing you control is showing up. This also shows that impressions are a vanity metric. LinkedIn wants you to refocus your attention on which post earned each follower ( https://www.socialmediatoday.com/news/linkedin-shares-information-on-new-creator-insights-options/873675/ ), saves, sends and in-network vs out-of-network views. Our key takeaway: post consistently, and judge each post by those metrics instead. And there's no better time to create LinkedIn content. On LinkedIn the money comes through brands: ads featuring creators are up 63% ( https://www.socialmediatoday.com/news/linkedin-increases-user-time-members-and-creator-ads/873266/ ) year over year. And 9 in 10 decision-makers ( https://www.edelman.com/expertise/Business-Marketing/2024-b2b-thought-leadership-report ) say they're more open to sales outreach from companies that consistently share thought leadership. Try my prompt in Ask Taplio ( https://taplio.com/ask-taplio?utm_source=customerio&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=nl_taplio ) “Find my posts with high engagement but low reach, and tell me which ones to remix and why.” Trends on the algo → LinkedIn now shows which post earned each follower. Plus saves, sends and in-network vs out-of-network views. Early comments, saves and reposts in the first two hours still decide where a post goes, per Richard van der Blom's latest algorithm report.
