Building Integrations from Scratch

The Paragon team knows a lot about building integrations from scratch. It can be the right choice for some teams. Here are the tradeoffs.

Almost every engineering team that uses Paragon has gone through a detailed build vs. buy evaluation during their trial. With 5 more days on your free trial, you are likely doing the same.

There’s no doubt that you could build an integration yourself. With each integration, you need to:

- Set up the auth flow and build a token refresh mechanism (for Oauth)
- Learn the 3rd-party application’s API
- Implement the desired integration logic
- Provide a UI for your users to auth into and configure the integration
- Repeat steps 1-4 for every iteration/use case

Conceptually, this is not that hard. With agents, you may even be able to build out a POC in days.

But building production-ready integrations that are maintainable, highly performant under high load, and that support hundreds/thousands of customers is a whole different ball game. You'll need to consider:

1) Do you want to manage these integrations (from API drift, deprecations, and other breaking changes) instead of core product features in perpetuity?

2) Do you want to spend your time designing, building, and maintaining the infrastructure for integration use cases like high-volume syncs and guaranteed webhook delivery?

3) Do you want to take the time battle-testing security needed when managing your user's OAuth tokens and credentials?

4) Do you want to spend time making sure every integration has proper error handling, rate limiting, and tracing?
