Set up a few categories

Categories work best when they're built around what you want people to talk about.

Most healthy Discourse communities are organized by use case, which makes it obvious to a new member where their post belongs. Think through the kinds of conversations you want to host - support questions, feature ideas and feedback, events, etc. - and create a category for each.

Start with 3 to 5; too many empty categories look worse than a few busy ones. You can always add more once you see what people actually post about.

Write a welcome topic

Write a welcome topic that answers two questions: what this place is and who it's for. Pin it to the top. It's the first thing every new member reads, and it should tell them they're in the right place.

You'll manage all of this from the community's front page, no code required. And don't overthink it; a clear starting structure beats a perfect one, and everything here is easy to reorganize once conversations are flowing.
